So my friends and family can be up on life here in GR

Fueled!

Every year I write about how my work party was the coolest thing - this year is no exception!  The theme was Fueled and the night was fun!

My 'Special Friend' and me at dinner :)

I was awarded the 2012 Marketplace Community Service award. I was SO shocked and honored.  It's sorta a weird thing to be awarded for something I do because I love.  Very humbling.

The entertainment was great: Mat Kearney sang, 3 comedians, a jazz lounge, a variety streetfair, and a arcade with Yesterdogs served all night long!

Thanks again Uncle Paul!  another great year!

Ode to a really great guy

This is a tribute to my grandpa.

My sweet grandfather passed away earlier this month, and when I say sweet, I mean like Saintly. We celebrated his 95th birthday together with friends on December 5th, we also held services in his memory.  It was really fitting in some ways, all of his family and friends together, and he was really the one enjoying himself the most.  Two scoops of heavenly ice cream with Rice Krispie sprinkles I'm sure were on his menu that day.  But when I went to sleep that night, I thought to myself, 'Today was a good day.'

I didnt really realize until I was much older that people weren't leaving their change in the pay phones, my grandpa was putting it there.  I also didnt really know that most kids didnt have personalized birthday wrapping paper.  And I still kinda think that if I could break into the old shop where his business was, I could probably find a Ritz cracker and some peanut butter squirreled away in the back of a desk drawer.  Speaking of that shop, if you were ever in there, I'll bet you can still smell that wonderful smell. Hard work and concern for others.

Grandpa was an admirable man.  Willing to stand firm when others wouldnt.  Willing to be second not because he was lazy or lacked drive, but because he was content, never striving.  He was a lifetime learner, and was always reading something.  He was a walking Grand Rapids historian, often times with humble personal stories of many of the familiar names around here.  He was a man against whom many other husbands were measured.  My great aunt once advised me to look for a man just like my grandfather, and then I would have found the one.

Grandpa was a man of faith.  His Bible was dogeared and worn from years of reading and studying.  And when he would pray it truly was like you were listening in on a conversation between two friends.  I can remember that often times the summation would be something like, 'and we thank you for ALLLLL of the good things you have given to us, in Jesus name, AMEN' which, as I read it back, reads like every other prayer, but I can hear just the way he said it.  He loved his Savior and lived his life as a reflection of that love.

I already miss my grandpa.  A few days after the funeral was Pearl Harbor Day, he would have been just 24, and I thought, 'I should ask him where he was when he heard the news.'  but I cant.

His time on this earth is over, he's rejoicing in Heaven now. I cant imagine that he's that much different from how he was here, I'm sure he his, but my human brain just cant fathom much more perfection!

I'm so thankful for the many years I had to enjoy and learn from Grandpa. He has given me, and everyone who knew him, a gift: a heritage of what a life well lived looks like, may we cherish and use it wisely.

My SIL Andrea took some good photos of the days surrounding the funeral, and also has a link to the funeral service which, as I said, was quite lovely.  You can find all that on her blog here.

Christmas is Coming!

Mr. Sweet and I decided that we are no longer Fresh Tree Rookies.
We now know things like: get the tag from your tree, pay for it, THEN pull your car around to get the tree; otherwise you're just in the way as the old tree man pointed out to us.
Also, you may need a hatchet on hand to fit the tree into the stand.
We know now without a shadow of doubt, you MUST use the ring on the tree stand and that above all else, you must whack the prongs in the bottom of the pan into the bottom of the stump, or the tree will just flop around like a wet noodle, trust me.
Yes, got it.  We're good now.

And I'm excited that these guys are already finished and waiting to be opened!

Christmas is coming, and the cat is getting fat!!!  It's been a while since we've had a Puffster update.  She's alive and kickin' and loving the holidays!

And here is my house, where a mantle is looking good and a fake tree is on a timer (best investment this season!)

Only 6 more sleeeeeeeps! :)

Baby V Coming soon!

It's hard to say really, I'm not completely sure who's more excited for my SIL's baby to come.  Me? or her?
The other weekend I was visiting my brother and SIL in Boyne and had the opportunity to attend one of her showers!  Dont mind if I do!

Awww cookies after my own heart!

I just love not knowing what they're having!!

So fun to celebrate with her, and see how much she's loved by friends and family.

Happy Thanksgiving!!!

My whole family was in town, that right there is definitely something to be thankful for!  I have been reminded over and over again how blessed I am in ALL areas of life.  And many of you reading right now contribute to that! Thank you!
The road many not always be straight or easy, but my God is good and in control of all things at all times.

Grace showing off her new orthodontics, and her mother Andrea, the fabulous Chef!

Sam the ham (or Frank Weinstein depending on the day) and Uncle Marv and Rita the November birthday kids

Huff and Puff and blow those candles out!  While Ellie and Linds the prego wait patiently.

These two boys and Wes too, learned a very fundamental boy thing this Thanksgiving break: How to use a lighter.

This pie is merely a representative of how fabulous my mother is at baking pies.  I think she made 5 this year, and they were unbelievably beautiful. and delicious!

Clara an Nate came too, I am thankful for them too, I just have no photos.  Whoops!

Oh That's SO Dutch

I'm Dutch. I dont think about it much aside from when I have a craving for almond paste around Christmas time (who doesnt?!), I cant throw a coupon out, and when I attend the annual Dutch-American Heritage Day Celebration with my friends.  It's becoming a bit of a tradition with the Paters, and it's a fun thing.

Tot ziens!!!

6 Guys?

Question: If you go to 5 Guys with your guy, does that make it 6 Guys?!

Aside from the food, they had this pop machine there, and those of you who know me, well, let's just say this girl likes her some fountain pop!  But it was touch Screen with all sorts of pop plus a number of flavor add in's!  I googled it later, even had it's own Wiki page, if that's not legit, I dont know what is!!  Linds-o-rama!  You gotta come down and check this out!

 Fountain pop of the future!

We ended up trying Mr Pibb Cherry Zero, Sprite Grape Zero, and Coke Zero with Lime

Happy Veteran's Day!

My Sweet is a Veteran and I'm so proud of the fact that he served.  What an honorable thing!  On Monday he was asked to attend a school assembly honoring Veterans.
I tagged along and had a great time!

We made it to four classrooms, he was a total rockstar!  duh! :)

Happy Veteran's Day!
Thank you for serving!

O Cedarville

I had the opportunity to return to lovely Cedarville, Ohio so a few of my High School girls could visit the school, Sweets and I could visit friends, and we just to enjoy a nice weekend!

I have no photos, but we saw Air Force One!  it was so cool.  We didnt even realize Obama was going to be in town, but there it was!  we got all tied up in the traffic and even saw the motorcade cars returning to the base after he left.  It was a fun added bonus for the weekend.

We went to Mom and Dad's and the gorge - 2 Cedarville musts!

Thanks to everyone who we visited!  We had a great time catching up and making new friends too!

A New Most Wonderful Time of the Year?

As far as child-like fun goes, I think Halloween has a shot at overtaking Christmas as the Most Wonderful Time of the Year.  It's just so fun with pumpkins, costumes, and candy!

Nothing like a beautiful Friday afternoon at work with 5000 extra family and friends for visitors!  Again this year we had our famous pumpkin decorating contest, the theme was Move!  Very creative, complete with a spinning Hippo and disco ball pumpkin!

Madagascar (the winner, it was spinning!)

Udderly amazing if you ask me!  (this was mine :)

Moves Like Jagger!

Lift off to the 3rd floor!

Adios 420 bldg.  Sad day :(

This was the runner up - spinning disco ball

And then 5000 people came!!!  Trick or Treat!

Light up candy - does it get better?!

My friends and I did our annual Alger Heights Halloween Fun run again, and this year we went as Price is Right contestants.  We got beat out in the costume contest by a certain over-sized elf and his reindeer.  Not to thrilled, I mean, let's talk originality and theme songs!  Hello!  No worries though, we're already brainstorming for next year!

I want to Spin the Wheel for the Showcase Showdown!

In the evening we had Trunk or Treat at church.  Great turn out and a lot of fun!!!!

These two werent even planned! :)

The Queen of Hearts and Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum!

Thank you for flying with us, please join us again soon!

See? Fun right?!

I hope your Halloween was just as Spook-tacular!!! :)
